ETNA and THE "VALLE del BOVE" CALDERA (23 August 2005) - Sicily's first

Pictures and feedback from Maria (SPAIN)

Hello Roberto!! Etna is one of the most beautiful things that I have ever seen in my life, thanks for all. Kisses from Bilbao,
María Txu.

Catania

Catania (east coast)
It is love at second sight when it comes to Sicily's second largest city but then it can hardly fail to enchant with its busy streets in the centre, black lava stone roads, magnificent baroque buildings, stylish shops, quiet but charming alleyways and colourful fish market.

Excursion to the ALCANTARA GOURGE (12 August 2005) - spectacular basalt gorge
The river "Fiume Alcantara" has cut a wildly romantic canyon through the volcanic rock which is 450m in length, 5-8m wide and up to 25m in depth. From the car park walk down the steps (for free) or take the lift to the bottom, where you can wade between the narrow walls.fantastic Romana mosaic

Valle dei Templi

AGRIGENTO (south coast) - Vally of temples
The famed Valle dei Templi is home to fantastic preserved Greek temples that stand against a backdrop of the distant sea. They are as awe-inspiring today as they must have been to the people who constructed them 2.500 years ago.

Selinunte

SELINUNTE (south coast) - gigantic city of ancient temples
Selinunte is the largest and one of the most important archaeological parks in Europe, it boats one of the largest Greek temples in the world. Two of the temples were rebuilt with orginial stones in the 19th century. Selinute is situated on a picturesque ridge upside a lovely sandy beach.

Strada di Sale

SALE DI TRAPANI (Westküste) - Saline and windmills
The coastline between the cities Trapani and Marsala is determined by salt works. Exeptional sea salt is produce here unsing 16th-century windmills. The Museo del Sale explains the production.

Taormina

ERICE (west coast) - The middle-age castle town
Erice has managed to maintain much of its medieval charm. The buildings of the three-cornered town are all built of locally quarried white stone, adding to its storybook apperance. The steep streets are also paved in characteristic pattern.

Taormina

PARCO LO ZINGARO (west coast) - Sicily's first nature reserve
The reserve was instituted in 1980 to protect 7 km of rocky coastline. Marked trails of various levels of difficulty traverese the steep interior, or creep along the cliff above the sea, occasionally forking down to small coves with sandy beaches. The reserve is rich in many rare native plants like the dwarf palm, the symbol of Zingaro.

INTRALEO CAVE (06 August 2005) -
Pictures and feedback from Delia (ITALY)

Liparische Inseln

AEOLIAN ISLANDS (north coast) - Volcanic Islands
Volcanic activity lent to each of these seven islands its own land and seascape. Evidence of 6.000 years of history, a live volcano, black lava beaches, the magnificently limpid sea, and food and wines intensely flavoured by the sun are well worth the trip out.
